What is Reflexology?

Reflexology is a method of bringing about changes within the body by the gentle manipulation and massage of the feet and hands. It is based on the concept that a the body is mirrored in the feet; that every part of the body has a reflex on the feet and hands. Although there are many types of reflexology they all work using this basic premise. It also is based on the supposition that the reflexologist is acting as a catalyst to enable the client's own body and mind to heal themselves. Reflexology also uses the Chinese Meridian energy channels which terminate in the feet and hands. This includes the use of universal and subtle energies in the healing of the individual.

What is a Treatment like?

After an initial discussion and the taking of a case history the client normally lies upon a couch or where this is difficult sits in a chair. I then work upon the feet in a gentle way. Occasionally there may be places that are tender, indicating an energy imbalance, and these are worked upon for a longer period.

The client is encouraged to relax and let go of the daily stresses. I may take them through a relaxation exercise just to assist in this. The treatment is often divided into three parts: 1) a general increase in the levels of relaxation, 70% of disease is thought to be caused by stress, relaxation can help combat this stress; 2) work progresses to the subtle energies of the body and the reflexes that relate to the systems within the body; 3) the final stage is work on specific problem areas followed by the use of further relaxation techniques. Colour, crystals and essential oils may also be used during the treatment.

An important aspect of the treatment is that the client is in control, they have a chance to talk about themselves before the treatment and during the treatment they can relate what is happening to them, or, as many do, fall asleep.

The treatment may cause a temporary reaction as the body releases toxins and stresses that have been stored for a long time, this can materialize as elation, tearfulness, lethargy, increased urination or even a mild cold. These reactions are normally short lived. It is also recommended that the client should take a walk before driving or operating machinery to bring themselves back from the deep relaxed state.

How Many Treatments?

This, of course, is up to the client. One treatment can sometimes cause sufficient change, but a series of 6, one every week or fortnight is the normal recommendation, with each case being open to discussion. It is also thought that reflexology can help in the prevention of some problems, acting like a tonic, so a monthly or 6 weekly treatment schedule may also be considered. Each person and their circumstances is looked at and treated separately.

Before & After

When coming for a Reflexology+Plus Treatment it would be helpful to me and of possible benefit to you to follow these simple requests:

  1. Please do not drink alcohol, coffee or tea immediately before a treatment as these stimulate the body & mind into an artificial state.
  2. Ensure any large meal is eaten at least one and one half hours before the treatment session and light snacks forty-five minutes before.
  3. Please do not use scented creams on the feet before a treatment, a simple wash, if possible, is sufficient. Please make sure the feet are accessible, with easily removed shoes and socks.
  4. Please bring a record of any symptoms and any thing else that may or may not appear to be related.
  5. After the treatment please drink plenty of water over the following twenty-four hours to flush the body through. Again please refrain from drinking alcohol, tea & coffee and eating a large meal or refined sugar such as chocolate and sweets; dried or fresh fruit is helpful if you feel hungry after the treatment.
  6. Take a walk , drink some water and eat a piece of fruit before attempting to drive or work.
